In EA FC 26, the development team is embarking on a mission to enhance the very fundamentals of gameplay including Dribbling and Movement, Defending, Passing and Shooting, Positioning, Physicality, and of course, Goalkeepers.
All of these improvements will apply across both the Competitive and Authentic gameplay mods in EA FC 26. We’ve all been there: you make a great save, only for the goalkeeper to parry the ball directly into the path of an oncoming attacker for an easy tap-in.
The community has provided a lot of feedback on goalkeepers, especially regarding their positioning, where they deflect the ball, and how their animations look.
The goal for EA SPORTS FC is clear: make goalkeepers more consistent and reliable, reduce the frustration they can cause, and improve the balance between skill and authenticity.
In our last deep dive, we covered Dribbling and Movement. Now, let’s jump right into the massive changes coming to Goalkeepers in EA FC 26.

Goalkeeper Fundamentals

In EA FC 26, goalkeepers have received several crucial improvements to their core logic. These changes are designed to reduce frustrating moments while staying true to real-world football.
Deflection Control: This is a huge one. A new level of control has been added for save deflections to significantly reduce the number of rebounds that go straight back to opponents. Most deflections will now be directed out of bounds, towards teammates, or into open space away from danger.
Goalkeeper Senses: The keeper’s ability to read shot trajectories has been refined. This change is designed to better reflect real-world save efforts and improve their shot detection, making their reactions feel more earned and intelligent.
Technical Improvements: The base systems for goalkeeper handling have been improved across the board. This results in more consistent shot-stopping and more reasonable, intelligent decision-making in one-on-one situations.
RL GK Positioning: The Smart Revolution
One of the most significant technological updates in EA FC 26 is the introduction of Reinforcement-Learning (RL) Goalkeeper Positioning.
This new system uses advanced machine learning to help AI-controlled goalkeepers make more realistic and effective decisions about where to position themselves in the box.
By analyzing countless in-game scenarios, the AI can now better cut down shooting angles and react to different types of attacks by adjusting its position more intelligently.
It’s important to note that RL Positioning is only active for positioning the goalkeeper before a shot; the system is not active when the keeper actually makes a save or performs a catch.
New Volumetric Animations

Let’s talk visuals—because who doesn’t love a game that looks as good as it plays? EA FC 26 brings in new volumetric animations for goalkeepers, and they’re a sight to behold.
- Built from real-world motion capture data, these animations make every dive, stretch, and scramble feel buttery smooth and totally lifelike.
- It’s not just eye candy—it means your keeper reacts more naturally to shots, boosting both authenticity and that “I’m in the game” vibe.
Whether they’re tipping a screamer over the bar or clawing a loose ball off the line, it’s going to look epic in EA FC 26.
Be-A-Goalkeeper
You can’t improve the fundamentals of GKs without touching the Be-A-Goalkeeper (BAG) experience.
In EA FC 26, this mode has received a comprehensive update with new controls, assistance levels, PlayStyles, a revamped UI, and an updated presentation, including unique camera and audio treatments.
Note: Players can also now play as keepers in Clubs RUSH.
Revamped Be-A-Goalkeeper Experience
For players who enjoy controlling the goalkeeper directly, the new control scheme gives you unprecedented command over your actions.
Dive Direction: You can now prepare your dive direction ahead of a shot. A simple flick of the Right Stick will prepare your keeper to dive in that direction for a short period.
Cross Claiming: When a cross comes in, you now have a choice. Press Circle/B to attempt a Punch, or press Square/X to attempt a Catch. Timing will be crucial to success.
One-on-One Situations: When rushing an attacker (Triangle/Y), you can decide how to engage. You can attempt to smother the ball at their feet with Square/X, or you can make yourself big to block the incoming shot with Circle/B.
Reaction Saves: If you want to take timing into your own hands, you can trigger an instant save attempt. Pressing R1/RB + a Right Stick Flick will perform a Reaction Dive on demand.
As someone who has always wanted to be a goalkeeper that I could control completely, this new experience feels like it will be great and very special.
Visuals
To support the new controls, the UI has been updated:
- A new Dive Direction UI will appear when there is potential for a shot.
- The auto-positioning AR visual has been updated.
- A new 11v11 camera brings you closer to the action, and you can now manually pan it by holding L1/LB and using the Left Stick.
Final Whistle
These goalkeeper upgrades aren’t just fancy extras—they’re about making EA FC 26 a fairer, more immersive ride.
Whether you’re relying on your AI keeper to hold the line or stepping up in BAG mode to make the big plays yourself, it’s all about balance and fun. No more cursing at deflections or clunky controls—just pure football joy.
So, lace up those virtual gloves and get ready to rule the penalty area. EA FC 26 is making goalkeeping a blast—time to show the net who’s boss!
